BUILDing Connections
BUILDing Connections is a free, virtual tutoring program for students at all nine Durham public high schools. Founded by one of Project BUILD’s orientation leaders, Devon Tonneson, as a year-round extension of BUILD, it enables BUILD alumni to continue serving Durham well beyond orientation by providing consistent academic support throughout the school year.

Us
Why We Started It How It Works:
We started BUILDing Connections after repeated experiences volunteering in Durham public schools where teachers described the same challenge: limited funding, limited capacity to provide after-hours help, and many students who need support but cannot afford private tutoring. Teachers can only do so much on their own. BUILDing Connections was built to make academic help accessible and consistent at no cost to families.

When: Three days per week, 5:00-11:00 PM

Where: Zoom, with breakout rooms for small-group and 1:1 help

Who tutors: Duke undergraduates who are Project BUILD alumni

Cost: Free

Why virtual: Zoom reduces transportation barriers and is often more feasible for families who cannot drive students to campus for in-person tutoring.

We tutor students in a wide range of academic AP courses offered across Durham public high schools, including:

Social Sciences: AP Economics (Micro and Macro), AP U.S. History, AP European History, AP Human Geography, AP U.S. Government and Politics, AP World History, AP Psychology

World Languages: AP Spanish Language and Culture, AP French Language and Culture, AP Latin (and additional languages as offered)
And if a student needs help outside this list, we do our best to match them with a tutor when possible.
